Why Texture Matters More Than Colour

In the world of interior design, colour often takes the spotlight. It’s what catches the eye first—a bold green wall, a soft blush sofa, a deep navy cabinet. But beneath the surface, there’s a more subtle language at play. One that speaks not to the eyes alone, but to the hands, the light, and the atmosphere of a space. That language is texture.

Texture adds dimension, depth, and emotion. A room painted in a single neutral tone can feel rich and layered if you combine matte finishes with natural grain, woven fabrics, brushed metals, or soft ceramics. The interplay of smooth and rough, glossy and raw, invites interaction. Texture tells you where to rest, what to touch, and how a space feels—even before you sit down.

At DBAK GmbH, we design furniture not only to be seen, but to be felt. The hand-sanded edge of an oak table, the boucle softness of an accent chair, the cool solidity of a concrete surface—these are the things that make a home feel alive. In fact, two chairs in the same colour can evoke completely different feelings depending on the materials used. One might say “clean and sleek,” the other “warm and grounded.”

Texture also plays beautifully with light. Morning sun on a linen headboard casts a different mood than it does on lacquered wood. Shadows become softer, moments become more intentional. In this way, texture becomes not just a detail, but a design tool—a quiet force shaping the soul of a room.

In an age of digital overstimulation and surface perfection, texture brings us back to the tangible. It encourages us to slow down and notice. And that, perhaps, is the most beautiful thing design can do.
